It’s the most wonderful time of the year! When it comes to marking the arrival of the festive season, there’s no better way to do it than by visiting Christmas markets. As soon as the first Advent door is opened, Europe’s biggest cities are filled with visitors, hoping to soak in a bit of that magic (and copious amounts of mulled wine).
Although you’ll find fabulous Christmas markets all around Europe, Austria (alongside Germany, of course) is considered the king of the festivities. In its heart, Vienna, you can experience scenes that seem straight out of fairy-tale books or Hallmark movies. So, get ready for twinkling lights and delicious scents – here is a breakdown of the best Christmas markets in Vienna you shouldn’t miss, plus tips to make the most of your experience.
Useful tips for visiting Vienna’s Christmas markets
Christmas market foods to try
If there is one thing Austrians do well, it’s comfort food. One of the main reasons why people visit Christmas markets in Vienna is to taste all the yummy food and drinks. After all – what could be better than a cup of Glühwein to warm up your hands (and belly)?
During your visit, we suggest you try Ofenerdäpfel – Austria’s famous baked potato. At the Christmas Markets, you’ll usually find two traditional versions, one with butter and chives and another with sour cream and parsley. If you’re craving something really hearty, the Überbackene Brote won’t disappoint. This dark bread topped with vegetables (or meat) and plenty of Tilsiter or Bergkäse cheese is to die for.
Those who prefer something more unusual should sample Suppe – a delicious broth served inside a bread bowl (yes, you read that right).
As for sweets, you can’t miss Kaiserschmarrn (something similar to shredded pancakes) and the Bauernkraphen (‘farmer’s donuts’).
How to dress
During the Christmas markets, the weather in Vienna can get quite cold, especially after the sun goes down. While you can always clutch to a warm mug of hot chocolate, we advise you to put on your best winter clothes. Layering is key – make sure to wear thermal underwear to stay warm even on the coldest days.
Bring cash
Although some Christmas markets may accept cards, most food and drink vendors only take cash, so make sure to have small bills on hand.
When to visit Vienna Christmas markets
The only downside of Vienna Christmas markets is that they can get swamped. If you want to escape the crowds, your best bet is to visit in late November or early December. Our tip: A fun thing to do when you get tired of all the lines is to explore the walkways dotted around the markets.

Travelers who are looking for a more ‘alternative’ experience will definitely love this Viennese Christmas market in front of the giant Baroque Karlskirche. It’s the only market in Austria with a strong focus on sustainability. In fact, all the yummy treats you’ll taste here are certified organic.
But if you’ve had enough of eating and drinking, take a look at all the handmade goods. The Advent Art Market is the perfect place to pick up a unique gift for your loved ones, with many unusual art pieces available.
Oh, and don’t miss the nearby church – it hosts regular performances of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, which is a bucket-list experience itself.
Christmas Market in front of Belvedere Palace (November 15 – December 26)
As you may know, Vienna was once the capital of the Habsburg Empire, and its many palaces are a testament to that time. Perhaps the most beautiful Christmas market in the city is set in front of one of these palaces – the 18th-century Upper Belvedere Palace. The elegant stalls, together with stunning baroque design and the nearby lake, are something you’d see in fairy-tale books.
What makes the Christmas market even better is the fact it’s not as crowded as the other ones, since it is located a bit outside the city center.
Christkindlmarkt (November 16th - December 26th)
Some call Rathausplatz Christkindlmarkt the main Christmas market in Vienna. With its dreamlike Christmas decorations and the impressive Neo-Gothic Town Hall as a backdrop, it doesn’t come as a surprise. The oldest Christmas market in the city has a carnival feel about it. You can hop on the double-decker carousel or enjoy the large ice skating rink.
