Budapest: A Solo Traveler's Perspective

Updated: Aug 21

Finding myself in Vienna this past June, I felt it was high time to check another Eastern European destination off my list – Budapest. Jumping on a train, I was transported from one historic gem to another in just a little over three hours. The journey itself was a prelude to the adventure, offering glimpses of the rolling countryside that shifted seamlessly into the urban hub that is Hungary's storied capital.

Budapest is a city that straddles the Danube River, bridging its two distinct personalities. Buda, with its medieval castles and quaint historic hills, carries an air of old-world enchantment. Pest, on the other side of the river, is resplendent with lively markets, cafes, and the thrum of urban life. Combined they create an atmosphere that’s unlike anywhere I've been before, and is uniquely Budapest. And as days turn to nights, the city transforms yet again, with the Danube illuminated by lights.

Itinerary in hand, I set out to explore Budapest. Here’s what I uncovered:

Accommodations

Continental Hotel Budapest

During my visit to Budapest, I was delighted to stay at the Continental Hotel Budapest, situated in the vibrant Jewish Quarter. Stepping off the streets and into the Continental’s spacious lobby, it was clear why this hotel was voted a TripAdvisor Travelers’ Choice Award for 2024. With over 200 rooms, the hotel itself is an amalgamation of traditional charm and modern, sleek furnishings. As Uber just started in Budapest only 10 days prior to my arrival, walkability from my accommodations was still at the forefront of my mind. Thus, the hotel’s central location was marvelous; only a 5-minute jaunt from the famous Szimpla Kert ‘ruin bar’ as well as an abundance of restaurants and shops. Furthermore, it’s in the direct vicinity of the Jewish Synagogue, which is the core of this historic neighborhood.

I stayed in a Standard Room, which was comfortably furnished albeit a tad cramped, specifically in regards to the bathroom. In light of the aforementioned spacing concerns, upgrading to a different room category might be advisable for those who prefer their wiggle room. I’d say this is especially true if traveling with family or planning a longer stay. Nonetheless, I still thoroughly enjoyed the stay.

One standout feature of the Continental Hotel Budapest was undoubtedly its amenities. The availability of both an indoor and rooftop pool provided us with a lavish escape, accompanied by a sunbathing area that beckons after a long day of sightseeing. Additionally, the sauna and available spa treatments add an extra layer of bliss, elevating an already sublime wellness experience.

The daily complimentary buffet breakfast was also notable, loaded with a variety of choices to suit all tastes. The hotel’s restaurant served lunch and dinner as well, providing guests with convenient dining options.

Overall, I would characterize my stay at the Continental Hotel Budapest as one brimming with comfort and convenience. The exceptional amenities and central location made it a wonderful base for exploring Budapest, and we highly recommend it!

Things to See & Do

River Cruise & Booze

The sunset sightseeing cruise along the Danube with unlimited Proseccos was without a doubt a highlight of my Budapest adventures. Floating gently down the river at sunset, the sight of the Parliament building illuminated against the night sky was breathtaking. The crew ensured our glasses were never empty, refilling them every 15 minutes, which added a sparkling touch to an already magical evening. I highly recommend this tour for a splendid view of the city in a relaxed yet festive atmosphere.

Budapest Walking Food Tour with Secret Food Tours

I discovered Budapest's best kept culinary secrets with Secret Food Tours. Originating in London, this tour company now operates in over 70 cities, yet I found Budapest's offerings to be exceptionally close to the top! My top pick? Definitely a delectably greasy Lángos at Retro Lángos which was pure, deep-fried heaven. For star sips, Dose Espresso introduced me to an unusual concoction of orange juice, coffee, and espresso tonic. Alongside the treasure trove of tastes featured on this walking tour our guide treated us to plenty of quirky insights to Budapest’s food scene. Learning that goulash, Hungary's famous "cowboy soup," is only authentic in this form here furthered my understanding and appreciation of Hungarian culture.

Shoes on the Danube

A short way from the sparkling Parliament lies a poignant reminder of darker times. The Shoes on the Danube is a haunting tribute to the Hungarian Jews who were the victims of unimaginable brutality during the Second World War. This stark memorial, cast in iron and laid out on the riverbank, is a sobering reminder of history that commands visitors to pause in reflective silence.

St. Stephen’s Basilica and Buda Castle

Among the rich religious offerings of Budapest is St. Stephen’s Basilica. This church is chock-full of gorgeous architecture that makes it well worth a visit. It’s a quick stop though, as you won’t need more than 30 minutes to take it all in! Additionally, we had our sights set on visiting Matthias Church at Buda Castle. The ascent to Buda Castle via the charming, though brief, Funicular was a fun added bonus to the excursion. Despite the website saying they only accept cash, I found they take credit cards as well. While Matthias Church may have paled in comparison to the basilica, the Fisherman’s Bastion rewarded us with panoramic views of the city.

Pro Tip: It’s worth paying for a ticket to go to the 2nd level to gain access to an unmatched photo spot.

Half Day Wine Tasting Tour

Venturing into Etyek Wine Country I embarked on my favorite activity of my entire trip: a wine-tasting tour. Each of the three wineries presented a different facet of Hungary’s wine heritage, with a cellar dating back over 150 years proving to be a particular highlight. The wineries each had their own unique charm and history, making for a truly spectacular tour experience. Sampling exquisitely sweet ice wine while surrounded by rolling vineyards reminiscent of Champagne, France, was nothing short of intoxicating. The tour ended with a dinner at the final winery, which I found to be the perfect conclusion to the day.

Szechenyi Bath

No trip to Budapest is complete without indulging in the thermal waters of Szechenyi Bath. I opted for a ticket that included a private changing room, which allowed for a more comfortable and secluded experience. Remembering to bring essentials like a towel, waterproof pouch, sunglasses, and sunscreen was crucial, as was a swimming cap for swimming laps. The Baths also offer a beer spa for those looking for a little extra fun!

Parliament Tour

Although initially challenged by the language barrier, my tour of the Parliament building proved immensely rewarding. Opting for a French audio guide due to the unavailability of English, I was pleasantly surprised when the guide answered my questions in English. This tour gave me a deeper understanding of Hungarian and Budapest's history within the confines of the beautiful parliament building. I definitely recommend booking in advance!

Where to Eat

Gaby's

Gaby’s quickly became a favored spot during my stay in Budapest. Not only did it offer to-die-for bar food and drinks, but the welcoming atmosphere of this LGBTQ+ bar was unmatched. Bryan, an American owner who named the bar after his dog, has created a warm, inclusive space that instantly felt like home.

Il Terzo Cerchio

I always find myself seeking out Italian food, no matter where my travels take me. Il Terzo Cerchio did not disappoint, offering delicious pizza paired with exquisite wine. I found the cozy, yet elevated atmosphere of the restaurant added an extra layer of enjoyment to the dining experience.

Borkonyha Wine Bar

Borkonyha Wine Bar, a Michelin-star restaurant, offers a six-course meal that is an exquisite showcase of flavors and artistry. Each dish was perfectly balanced and beautifully presented, with an excellent wine pairing option to boot. I thought the experience was truly worth it!

Felix

A Michelin Guide Restaurant near the Castle District, Felix lived up to its reputation with every dish served. I found the Veal Piccata impeccable, making it a must-try for anyone visiting.

Szimpla Kert

Szimpla Kert, known as the most famous ‘ruin bar’, offered a uniquely energetic and eclectic atmosphere over its two lively levels. The venue’s charm lies in its vibrant, youthful energy that manages to remain genuine, rather than succumb to being a tourist trap. Whether you're there for street food, avant-garde art, or open-air theater, this creative hotspot has it all.

Pro Tip: For those wishing to indulge in hookah, make sure to carry cash.

Gundel

Located near the Budapest Zoo & Botanical Garden, Gundel is renowned for its 130-year legacy of providing an elegant dining experience. The option to sit outside in the summer or enjoy the cozy indoor setting in winter adds versatility to this eatery.

In Conclusion

Reflecting on my journey through Budapest, it's evident that this city offers plenty of experiences that are better shared than solo. While I think it’s a great spot for any traveler, I've come to realize that its offerings are ones that are significantly amplified with friends. From the ruin bars that beckon for lively nights out with friends, to the communal leisure found within the Turkish baths, Budapest cultivates moments that are inherently social. I saw several bachelorette parties during my 4-night stay, solidifying my view that this is a hotspot city for groups. That said, I found Budapest to be an amazing travel destination teeming with culture and cuisine that was unforgettable. I can’t wait to return one day with my husband!
