Discover Amsterdam: Your Insider Guide to the City’s Best Experiences

Updated: 6 days ago

Recently, I had a fantastic experience on the Avalon Waterways Romantic Rhine River cruise. At the conclusion of our trip, we had an opportunity to visit and spend some time in Amsterdam – a city with a delightful, cheerful vibe that’s entirely its own. From beautiful parks and delicious Dutch pancakes to exciting art museums with Golden Age masterpieces and, yes, cannabis-clouded coffee shops, Amsterdam is a place where you can experience it all.

This wasn’t my first time in Amsterdam; I had already visited in 2018. However, I can definitely say that the second time here made me appreciate the city much more! Whatever your idealized version of a European getaway entails, I’m sure Amsterdam won’t disappoint. So, if you’re thinking about heading there for your next adventure, here are my best tips on what to do, see, and eat.

Accommodations

Hotel De L’Europe

Amsterdam is the place to go for hotels with a past. It’s much more fun to stay in one of the former almshouses, canalside mansions, or even schools! The perfect hotel to get a taste of that is Hotel De L’Europe. Unlike other accommodations in the city, which have a sleeker feel, this one will charm you with its sophisticated and historic ambiance.

Opened in 1868, De L’Europe has been under the ownership of the Heineken family since 1950. Besides its rich history, this five-star hotel can pride itself on truly remarkable hospitality and stunning design. Even though my stay here wasn’t long, it was nothing short of perfection. From the exceptional service to the delicious food and incredible 4,300-square-foot spa and wellness center, De L’Europe ticked all the boxes for the ideal Amsterdam (and, I dare to say, European) stay.

If you decide to book your getaway at De L’Europe, you can choose one of the rooms with classic design or opt for one of 14 individually designed suites (all featuring works of local Amsterdam artists), which were finished in 2022.

This time, I stayed in the Junior Suite Canal View, and I can’t emphasize enough how much I adored it! It had stunning design, plenty of space (around 50 square meters), and thoughtful details everywhere, including premium bedding, thick terry towels and bathrobes, Diptyque bathroom amenities, and much more.

Those craving something even more luxurious can book one of the signature suites, such as the Presidential Loft Suite or the Royal Penthouse Suite, which both include butler service.

Hotel De L’Europe is also a popular place for hosting events. In fact, the five-star hotel offers four event spaces, which cater to weddings, social gatherings, and corporate meetings. Conveniently, they have a florist and decorator on-site.

Food and Drinks

Like the hotel itself, its restaurants and culinary offerings were no less exceptional. In fact, one of its main draws is Marie –  a lovely Côte d’Azur-inspired bistro with plenty of delicious meals available. When staying at the hotel, this is where breakfast is served from 7 to 11 AM every morning. Guests can enjoy the buffet with all kinds of cheeses, meats, and pastries, plus it’s possible to order a la carte items like omelets, eggs Benedict, French toast, pancakes, and Belgian waffles.

Besides Marie, there are three other restaurants on-site. Head to Freddy’s bar for delicious cocktails (Bloody Mary is the signature drink here) and small bites, while Trattoria Graziella serves yummy Italian cuisine (you can order room service, too; the service and food are great!). The hotel is also home to the 2-star Michelin restaurant Flore.

Spa and Wellness Center

After a long day of exploring, head to De L’Europe’s Le Spa by Skins Institute. Here, you will find everything you need to fully recharge and relax – an indoor pool, a Finnish sauna, a Turkish steam bath, an infrared red sauna, and even a 24/7 fitness studio with the best gym equipment.

Pro Tip: The spa provides flip flops and towels, so you can come down just in your swimsuit, robe, and slippers!

Things to See & Do

Hotel De L’Europe is so good it’s worth a trip itself! The only problem is you’ll never want to leave, but there’s so much to do and see in Amsterdam. Here are my favorite things to show you the best of what the Dutch city has to offer.

Canal Cruise

Well, obviously! Amsterdam is a city that’s shaped by water. During your visit, make sure to cruise its Canal Ring (also a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

While it’s fun to do this at any time, my tip is to hop on a cruise at night when the view is all the more dreamy from the water. You can rent an electric canal boat yourself or join one of the many sightseeing cruises.

Visit the Amsterdam Tulip Museum

The best time to visit Amsterdam is in spring, when tulips are in full bloom and you can experience the iconic views you see on typical Dutch postcards. But if, like me, your adventure is planned at a different time, you can always visit the Amsterdam Tulip Museum, where you can learn all about the history of the country’s favorite bloom.

Enjoy Beautiful Views at LuminAir Cafe

The best way to discover Amsterdam? From above, of course! LuminAir is one of Amsterdam’s hippest sky bars and kitchens, offering high-end mixology and matching bar bites. To make the most of your experience, try the signature Lumen-based menu.

Check Out This Is Holland

If you’re staying for just a few days, you won’t be able to see everything Holland is famous for. Or will you? This is Holland lets you experience the very best of the Netherlands in just one hour! It’s a unique, interactive experience where different smells, sounds, and effects make you feel like you’re flying over the Dutch highlights. Definitely a must-visit!

Stop By the Anne Frank’s House

In May 1940, Nazi Germany invaded the Netherlands, and the country’s Jewish community experienced indescribable terrors. The 17th-century canal house, where Anne Frank and her family hid from the Nazis, is a place where you can witness the war’s impact on real people. It’s not only a chilling reminder of our history but also a testament to Anne’s bravery.

Pro Tip: Tickets for Anne Frank’s House sell out quickly, so make sure to book your visit at least six weeks before.

Tour Amsterdam’s Art Museums and Galleries

Van Gogh Museum

The Dutch city is a paradise for art lovers! Conveniently, Amsterdam’s top three museums are located in the same area (also called Museumplein). The biggest and grandest is the Rijksmuseum, which offers a huge collection of Dutch art dating back to the Golden Age (plus a small Asian collection).

Just around the corner, you will find the iconic Van Gogh Museum, which houses the largest collection of the artist’s work in the world (it has the famous Sunflowers among it!). Once you’ve gone through van Gogh’s masterpieces, you can stop by the Stedelijk Museum next door, which is well-recognized for its collection of modern and contemporary art.

If you’re a fan of photography, the Foam Photography Museum is also a must-see, as it regularly hosts some of the city’s best exhibitions.

Walk Around the Red Light District

You can’t travel to Amsterdam and not visit the Red Light District! I was surprised at how safe the infamous sex district feels, especially during the day. While it has a bad rep, the Red Light District is also Amsterdam’s oldest neighborhood, home to many charming little squares and impressive monuments (and even a church), so make sure to include it in your itinerary.

Join Walking Tours

I’m a big fan of walking tours. You don’t have to worry about getting stuck in traffic or missing a photo opportunity. If you’ve never tried walking tours, Amsterdam is the place to do it, as it is an incredibly walkable city. In fact, locals consider walking distance if it’s under 45 minutes!

Of the many walking tours available, I especially recommend the Hello Amsterdam Walking Tour with Who is Amsterdam and the Jewish Quarter Walking Tour. Both are a fun way to discover the city up close and personal! Just make sure not to walk on red asphalt – it’s the bike lane.

Additional Tips for Visiting Amsterdam

  • Beware of bike riders! Amsterdam is known to have more bikes than people, so don’t make a rookie mistake of getting in their way

  • Amsterdam has a convenient public transport system; you can simply swipe your credit card as you get on and off the tram

  • Each year, Amsterdam comes alive for the King’s Day celebrations to honor the King’s birthday. If the date falls in an undesirable month, the event is often adjusted to a more favorable time in the summer. The festivities fill the streets with vibrant markets, concerts, and all-day celebrations. This is also when many boats are lined up, and it’s possible to walk from one to another

  • If you’re not visiting in April, consider planning your vacation in August. That’s when the Pride parade & music festival take place
