Discover Vienna: Immersive Culture Experience

Recently, I had the privilege of being hand-selected by the Austria Tourism Board to partake in a one-of-a-kind immersion experience. After sending off a two-minute video submission to apply to the program, I eagerly awaited (passport at the ready!) my fate. Gratefully I was accepted and jetted off post-haste to begin my education. From June 17 to June 22, I fell madly, deeply in love with Vienna. This was the kind of love that urges you to buy souvenirs, even when your suitcase is already bursting at the seams.

I found Vienna's charm as infectious as it was timeless, and our hosts treated us to the best the capital had to offer. From five-star luxury accommodations to private tours and pampering, I had an amazing time getting to know the city. During my stay, it became quite clear that one could spend a month or more here and still find themselves enchanted by new gems day after day. Whether exploring the vibrant art scene, indulging in the culinary delights, or simply meandering through the historic streets that Mozart once called home, every day in Austria presents a new chapter.

Stay tuned as I take you through the winding streets of my Viennese adventures!

Why Visit Vienna?

Vienna epitomizes an adventure that is both traditional and innovative. Its core consists of a rich history, a thriving cultural scene, and a dedication to the finer things in life. It’s a city that truly offers a taste of the good life, the Gemütlichkeit (coziness), and the historical intrigue that European dreams are made of.

The “most livable city in the world” accolade from the Economist isn't just a title; it's a lived experience reflected in the city's high quality of life, safety, and public amenities. With a population of 2 million residents within its limits, Vienna is the urban heart of Austria. The sprawling nature of the city contributes to its ability to offer a variety of activities. Vienna distinguishes itself from other cities with a variety of unique traits:

Vienna is the only capital city in the world that cultivates vineyards within its borders. Only here can you savor the exclusive Viennese wine, a product of the local grape varieties cherished by both connoisseurs and casual sippers. With over 650 farmers, Vienna maintains a proud tradition of supporting local agriculture, connecting residents and visitors alike with the roots of their food.

Another testament to the city's commitment to quality and tradition is that all official tourist guides must undergo a thorough two-year training program, ensuring that visitors receive knowledgeable and insightful tours. The comprehensive training they undergo is clearly reflected in the depth of understanding and enthusiasm they bring to their tours, as we were able to see firsthand.

Local entrepreneurship thrives here, with most shops being locally owned, ensuring a unique and personal shopping experience steeped in authentic Viennese charm. Furthermore, 95% of restaurants and shops close on Sundays, inviting a slower pace and a day of rest, a rare find in today's bustling world. For those who find themselves in need of essentials during off-hours, supermarkets conveniently located at train stations and the airport remain accessible

Accommodations

Rosewood Vienna

Opening its doors in August 2022, the Rosewood Vienna should be on your travel radar. Here’s why:

The building, an architectural marvel, retains the essence of its previous life as a bank reimagined into a boutique sanctuary. With just 100 rooms, this hotel creates the sensation of being an esteemed guest at a private manor. Its lobby is reminiscent of a well-appointed living room, extending a warm welcome to every guest. This ensures a guest check-in that feels more like a homecoming. A nod here, a smile there, and suddenly, you're not just a guest, but a part of the Rosewood family.

There's an understated allure to a hotel that knows when to transform. That's why I love Rosewood's decision to reduce spa space and convert the area to bespoke spa suites. This choice echoes a sentiment I hold dear: personalized luxury > vast, empty spaces.

The Rosewood's central location only furthers its appeal, offering breath-stealing views of Vienna moments away from luxury shopping and iconic sights. The city's influence doesn't stop at the hotel walls, rather it is embraced, with locally sourced ingredients featured in every meal. The complimentary breakfast, with its buffet of fresh foods, and truffled scrambled eggs? Impeccable. Even more impressive was the dining at the Rosewood's rooftop bar and restaurant. The vibes were immaculate, the food to die for, and the views were unmatched. Plus, we were lucky enough to have the perfect weather during our trip, which made this the perfect spot to soak up those skyline views.

But what genuinely set the Rosewood apart was its heart; the people. The service here was superior by far, and I would hands down stay here again due to that alone! The concierge team, ever so thoughtful, perceived my exhaustion after a long day and arranged for the spa to remain open post-closing. A gesture unsolicited but deeply appreciated, allowing me to unwind in peace. It was this above-and-beyond service that truly made this a five-star stay in my book. Paired with 24-hour in-room dining, a thoughtfully curated pillow menu, and a turndown service that included a bedtime story and sweet treat—every amenity is a testament to Rosewood Vienna's dedication to guest satisfaction.

So, for those setting sail for Vienna, make your harbor at the Rosewood.

The Amauris

Opened in February 2023, The Amauris is a hotel that holds on to its noble roots while simultaneously offering modern comforts. The hotel's design, contemporary with a boutique flair, might not be to everyone's preference, but I found myself absolutely enamored with their artistic vision. The Amauris boasts 62 suites and rooms, splitting these accommodations into 45 rooms and 17 suites across 11 categories. The demographic here was varied, from love-struck couples to adventurous families with older children, all coexisting in the same serene ambiance. The hotel seamlessly meets these needs with its availability of twin and connecting rooms. I was particularly delighted to find that the junior suite could be adjoined to a grand deluxe suite, making it perfect for larger groups desiring a shared space with a dash of privacy.

As a wellness enthusiast, I deeply appreciated the spa, which welcomed guests from 3 pm to 10 pm (But will open their doors earlier on request). During summertime, the roof above the pool area would slide open, connecting bathers with blue skies. With only one massage room, the demand for this intimate luxury could be high, but it only added to the spa's charm. Complete with a sauna, steam room, pool, showers, thermal chairs, and a relaxation area, I adored this spa.

Another one of my favorite features of this hotel was the year-round terrace. The only one of its kind in Vienna’s first district, the terrace becomes a vibrant social hub from Thursday to Sunday, offering live music. Additionally, the food at the Amauris was perfection. Morning meals were delicious, and dinner service, running from Tuesday to Saturday, upheld the same culinary excellence. For those midnight cravings or quiet breakfasts in bed, the 24-hour room service is a godsend. Though it's not included in your stay, the modest 10 Euro fee was well worth the cost.

Overall, The Amauris left me feeling like royalty, even if only for a few nights.

Things to See and Do

Vienna is a city that manages to be both grand and intimate, with plenty to do without feeling overwhelming or touristy. Here are a few things we did as well as some suggestions on how to spend your time in the city:

Food Safari with Bianca

We highly recommend taking a food tour while in Vienna, specifically, the food safari with Bianca Gusenbauer-Hoppe. This three-hour sampling of the flavors of Vienna gave us an up close and personal taste of the city. Over several stops our tastebuds were treated to a variety of delicacies. From savory snacks to superb sweets, each destination was carefully curated to showcase a blend of local dishes. Of course, no food journey would be complete without a glass of local beer or wine to wash it all down. Prost!

Baking Class

For an experience that is delightfully indulgent, we recommend the Kaiserschmarrn class at Kruste und Krume. Alongside friendly and knowledgeable instructors you'll learn to make this iconic dish of imperial Vienna. We promise this class is a fun and delicious way to spend an afternoon.

Shopping Tour

Taking us to several prestigious former court suppliers, our shopping tour in Vienna was a truly unique retail experience. These stores, once purveyors of royal fashion, have now become experts at infusing modern-day shopping with imperial allure. We found the tour was a great way to learn about Vienna's royal court, as well as get some shopping done!

Wien Museum

My first stop was the Wien Museum, recently given a new lease on life through renovation. The museum provides an in-depth understanding of the daily lives of Viennese across the centuries. Don't miss the chance to enjoy panoramic views from the terrace, with a café on the rooftop that offers panoramic views of bustling Vienna.

Belvedere Palace

The charm of Vienna continued to unfold at the Belvedere Palace. By booking a private guide, I gained access to the palace before it officially opened. This decision rewarded me with the peaceful luxury of exploring its grand rooms and halls without the crowds and is an experience I highly recommend. The Belvedere not only houses one of Austria's most valuable art collections but is also surrounded by gorgeous gardens that make this palace a must-see. If heading there during the winter season, the Belvedere is also host to Christmas Markets.

Pro Tip: Go early, snag the last slot of the day, or take a tour after hours to beat the crowds.

Austria Parliament

Equally compelling was my visit to the Austrian Parliament. The Austrian Parliament's recent renovation has transformed it into a beacon of architectural beauty and historical significance. I took advantage of the free parliament tour, but the standout was the four-course dinner experience that followed, an indulgence not to be missed.

Other Things To Do:

Burggarten Park

Tuesday to Friday 8-9am

For those interested in the equine arts, watching the Spanish horses during their morning walk in Burggarten Park offers a serene start to the day. There's also the option to explore further with tickets to their training show or a behind-the-scenes look via private tours.

Schönbrunn Zoo

The oldest zoo in the world, located in Vienna, not only offers a chance to see a wide variety of animals but is also a journey through conservation history.

Wiener Hofmusikkapelle

Joining the Sunday church service at the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle might give you the chance to hear the mesmerizing Boys Choir. While not guaranteed, the potential of witnessing this performance adds a layer of excitement to the visit.

Vienna's Events

Ringing in the new year with the concert at Musikverein is a magical experience, complemented by the ability to tour this iconic music hall. The Street Art festival and a visit to the Schmetterling Haus, especially outside of the summer months, offer cultural experiences emblematic of Vienna's diverse appeal.

Once again we extend our heartfelt gratitude to the Austria Tourism Board for this incredible opportunity to experience Vienna and share our thoughts with you. We hope that you enjoy reading about our adventures as much as we enjoyed living them!
